PETERBOROUGH MAKES TOP 10 ON “CANADA’S BEST PLACES TO LIVE” LIST

In April, 2009, MoneySense Magazine ranked the Peterborough Census Metropolitan Area (CMA) in the top 10 on the “Canada’s Best Places to Live” list. The list of 154 Canadian cities is compiled based on data gathered in the areas of prosperity, affordable housing, weather and air quality and lifestyle.

“We are very pleased to have made the top ten on the “Canada’s Best Places to Live” list this year!” stated Andy Mitchell, Greater Peterborough Area Economic Development Corporation (GPA EDC), President & CEO. “We plan to utilize this ranking in our marketing efforts to make certain that anyone considering the region for business location, travel, to practice medicine and/or to live knows what we have always known, that the Peterborough area is one of the best places to live in this country.”

Canada's Best Places to Live measures every important aspect of every community in Canada. We've taken weather into account, of course. Jobs and home prices, too. We've also looked at crime and access to health care. In total, we looked at 24 different indicators and rewarded points for each one. Source: www.canadianbusiness.com

The Peterborough CMA ranked in the top half of almost all of the categories and showed particular strength in:

  • Time to buy a house
  • Precipitation
  • Percentage of people who walk, ride bikes to work
  • Population growth
  • Buzz (population employed in culture, arts, sport)
  • Provincial income tax
  • Provincial sales tax

Peterborough Ranks in Top 10 of Canada's most Walkable Cities!

Peterborough has ranked 5th in a Canada-wide contest to be the most walkable city in Canada. In August's edition of West Jet's airline magazine Up!, Peterborough was beat out only by the larger centres of Vancouver, Toronto, Victoria and Halifax.

Peterborough is being recognized as a great place to get around on foot. With new sidewalks and trails in 2009, the City is expecting to see a continued trend of increased walking and cycling. Surveys indicate that trails encourage local residents to leave their vehicle at home to get out walking and cycling.

Canada's Most Walkable Cities

The contest entry was submitted by Active and Safe Community Routes, a partnership with representatives from City of Peterborough, Peterborough Green-Up, the Peterborough County-City Health Unit, Ganaraska Hiking Group, Community Care and the Council for Persons with Disabilities.

Canada's Most Walkable Cities, presented by up! magazine and the Canadian Federation of Podiatric Medicine, are chosen based on the experience they provided for the pedestrian-ranging from width of sidewalks to parkland. The index will be published again next May and annually after that in a much-needed effort to recognize, celebrate and critique how Canadian cities facilitate the most basic travel of all: the one that starts with our own two feet. Peterborough Recognized as one of the Best Places to Build a Log Home

Log Home Living magazine has listed Peterborough as one of the 10 best places to build a log home! Peterborough was the only Canadian city that was recognized among competitors such as Wenatchee - Washington, Trinidad - Colorado, Fayetteville - Arkansas, Madison County - Virginia, La Crosse - Washington, Utica - New York, Steubenville - Ohio/Weiton - West Virginia, Helena - Montana and Boise - Idaho.

The ranking was based on factors such as views, affordable acreage and distinctive local colour. The article states that Peterborough is a forward-thinking town with the perfect critical mass of natural beauty, great people and taste. It also states that the area offers an abundance of all-season recreational activities.
